Cognac is a type of brandy, but is produced in a specific region that is France and also its production method is a bit set apart from the other brandies.

Cognac can only be produced in the Cognac region of France. The term “cognac” is a legal designation where even if a brandy has the exact same type of distilling method as a cognac region of France to be called cognac because of the specific growing conditions in the region. However, a brandy can be created anywhere while the rating system in the World.

Cognac is created using six grape varieties grown in the Cognac region. It is distilled twice and aged in French oak barrels. All cognacs follow this trend set by France alcohol rating while brandies have no trend to follow although some non-French brandies sometimes use the French rating system.
