Types of Brandy in Kenya- Dial a Drink Kenya
Brandy comes from the Dutch word “brandewijn” meaning 'burned wine'. Brandy are distilled spirits that are made from fermentation of fruit juices. The most common fruits used are apple grapes and pears. It can also be made from apricots, apples, and cherries. There is a little difference between brandy and cognac though people see them as the same. Brandy is any liquor that is made from fermented juice while cognac is liquor made from grape juice, where in simple terms all cognacs are brandy while not all brandies are cognacs. Brandy has a fruity and subtle sweet taste with flavor notes of oak since it is aged in wooden casks. Any brandy that is aged has a mellow and a complex taste. Brandies that are aged more than two years are classified as matured brandies while those aged less than two years are classified as unaged brandy.
There different types of brandies and most known one is a Cognac. Cognacs are also those brandies made from grape juice of a particular region in France called Cognac but brandies are made from fermented grape juice from anywhere in the World. The youngest French brandy cognac is aged for at least two years, after which is labeled as V.S(Very Special) while any French brandy that is at least four years old is labeled as V.S.O.P (Very Superior Old Pale) and the French brandy that is at least six years old is labeled as X.O (Extra Old) or Napoleon.
There are some brandies which are not made from grapes such as apple brandy but they are all marked on the bottle label whether it’s a grape brandy or an apple brandy. This brandy is classified as Applejack brandies. Applejack brandy is an American fruit brandy made from apples and created in New Jersey.
There is another type of brandy labeled as Pisco brandy. It is made in the Italian region of Switzerland, or San Marino and is made from pomace-the skin, pulp seeds, and stems leftover from wine making.
Brandy is commonly consumed at room temperature or over ice as an after-dinner drink or can be enjoyed on its own or as part of a cocktail.
